which will convert the analog signals from the sensor into digital outputs that will be sent to the eBox via
the USB cable. The webcam would be directly connected to the USB port of the eBox. The iRobot Create
will be pre-programmed to take instructions from the eBox. The eBox is a mini-computer that collects all
the data from the different components and transmits them via its wireless card to the user’s computer.
The following block diagram Figure 3 represents the basic design of the Gas Bot.
The user control center, also shown in Figure 3, consists of a computer that communicates with the
robot. The computer contains a GUI that allows the user to communicate and control the Gas Bot with
ease. The GUI is programmed in C# and has the ability to display video from the webcam, show toxic gas
concentration from the gas sensor, and control the movement of the robot.

Table 5 lists the features, brand, product details and benefits of the components necessary for
system operation. Each component will interface with the other parts, so the type of connectivity between
the parts is a key feature to consider. The products are cheap, reliable, and user-friendly. Not all parts
listed in the table will be incorporated in the Gas Bot. For example, the LCD monitor will be used only as
a visual display when programming the eBox during experimental stages.
